How this calculator works

Before-tax (concessional) contributions include your employer's super guarantee and anything you salary sacrifice. They are taxed at 15% in the fund. If your own tax rate is higher than 15%, putting money in before tax can save you tax.

We work out your employer contribution at 12% of pay (up to the maximum contribution base), compare it with the $32,500 cap, and show how much room is left. If your total super balance was under $500,000 on 30 June last year, you may also use unused cap amounts from the previous five years.

Tax saved here is an estimate from the rate you choose. Contributions over the cap are taxed at your marginal rate, so go carefully near the limit.

Contribution limits, 2026-27

Concessional (before-tax) cap$32,500
Non-concessional (after-tax) cap$130,000
Bring-forward of 3 years of non-concessional cap$390,000, if total super balance under $1.84 million
Carry-forward of unused concessional capUp to 5 years, if total super balance under $500,000
Maximum contribution base$270,830

Frequently asked questions

What counts toward the concessional cap?

Your employer's super guarantee, salary sacrifice and any personal contributions you claim a tax deduction for. Together they must stay under the cap to avoid extra tax.

Can I use unused cap from earlier years?

Yes, if your total super balance was under $500,000 on the previous 30 June. Unused amounts from up to five years ago can be carried forward, oldest first.

How much tax can salary sacrifice save?

About the difference between your marginal tax rate and the 15% contributions tax, on the amount you sacrifice. People on lower incomes save less.

What are after-tax (non-concessional) contributions?

Money you put in from your take-home pay without claiming a deduction. They have a separate cap and are not taxed again going in.
