How this calculator works

Each year we take out your withdrawal, raised by inflation, and then grow what is left by your chosen rate of return. We repeat that until the money runs out, or until age 110.

We also work backwards to find the monthly amount that would last until age 95, which is a common planning horizon.

Amounts are before tax. Withdrawals from a traditional 401k are taxed as income, so plan for taking home less.

What the first-year withdrawal rate tells you

About 3%Cautious. Money often lasts a very long time.
About 4%A common starting guide for a 30-year retirement.
5% or moreHigher risk of running out early, especially in a weak market.

Frequently asked questions

How long will $500,000 last in retirement?

It depends on how much you take out and how your money grows. Enter your own numbers above. At a 4% first-year withdrawal many people plan for it to last about 30 years.

What is a safe withdrawal rate?

Around 4% of your starting balance in the first year, raised with inflation, is a common guide. It is not a guarantee, and it is not suitable for everyone.

Are 401k withdrawals taxed?

Yes. Withdrawals from a traditional 401k count as income. Withdrawals from a Roth 401k are tax-free if you meet the rules. This calculator shows amounts before tax.

Does inflation matter?

Yes. Prices rise over time, so the same dollar amount buys less. We raise your withdrawal each year by the inflation rate you enter.

Should I include Social Security?

Social Security helps, but it is not part of your 401k. Enter only the amount you plan to take from your 401k, so the result shows how long that part lasts.
